Medical Personnel Exchange Program

Dr. Miriam Lara de la Rosa is committed to improving the quality of life for people suffering from eye diseases in Oaxaca, Mexico. We met Dr. Lara on a WCF medical mission trip to Huatulco, Mexico in 2012. Dr. Lara screened and organized patients ahead of time and then worked with our team throughout the week. She participated in another WCF mission trip to Ometepec in February of 2013. After working with her on these two missions, Drs. John Freeman and John Van Dyck encouraged Dr. Lara to apply for the World Cataract Foundation Medical Personnel Exchange Program.

In early 2014 Dr. Lara traveled to Memphis to participate in the MPEP. The MPEP is designed to provide visiting ophthalmologists opportunities to observe the most advanced cataract surgery techniques, teamwork approach to surgery and clinic management. Through the combined efforts of ophthalmologists at Memphis Eye and Cataract Associates and University of Tennessee Hamilton Eye Institute, Dr. Lara observed the most advanced surgical techniques in many subspecialties including cataract, cornea, retina, glaucoma and oculoplastics. A premier part of the training program is access to the Hamilton Eye Institute’s world class skills transfer center which includes a surgical simulator, indirect ophthalmoscope simulator and Cataract Training Lab.

WCF expanded its program for Dr. Lara to include a Small Incision Cataract Surgery Workshop with Dr. Diego Mejia in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. In August of this year WCF sponsored the additional training for Dr. Lara. Advantages for small incision cataract include: it is not necessary to use an expensive phaco machine; it is sutureless; lower cost PMMA lens instead of foldable; less time needed for surgery, and highly successful results. WCF is looking forward to continuing our partnership with Dr. Lara for many years to come.
