In Loving Memory of Sister Diane Young

Virginia Diane Young

May 16, 1934 – January 15, 2021

For over 25 years, Sister Diane Young, a devout Catholic and faithful servant of God, brought people from her village, Tlacoachistlahuaca, to the WCF cataract surgical missions in Ometepec, Mexico. Twice a year, Sister Diane brought Amuzgo and Mixteco Indigenous people to be screened and scheduled for surgery. From early on, Sister Diane learned to identify mature cataracts. All the people she brought had very mature cataract which led to some very challenging surgeries.

She was always a loving presence making sure everyone had food, water and transportation.

She brought others to help with translating and other many tasks involved with the screening, surgeries and postop checks.

Diane was a beloved and treasured member of the World Cataract Foundation teams. A few years ago Diane retired from her work in Mexico and moved to California to be with her loving family.
